Fire protection in the homeoffice: What employers and employees have to consider

Home office is an integral part of the modern working world. But while we are happy about the flexibility and the elimination of commuting, one important aspect often goes into the background: fire protection. Who is responsible if something happens in the home office? And what do both employers and employees have to consider in order to work safely?

Homeoffice

The legal gray area: Who is responsible?

In the commercial office building, the responsibilities are clearly regulated. The employer is responsible for compliance with all fire safety regulations. In the home office, however, this limit blurs.

Basically, the employer has a duty of care, which also extends to the home workplace. He must ensure that the workplace meets the legal requirements. However, the employee is responsible for safety in his own four walls, since he has the authority over the premises. This means that there is a shared responsibility.

What employers need to do

Even if the employer is not on site to carry out a fire safety inspection, there are important measures that he must take:

  • Risk assessment: The employer must prepare a risk assessment for the home office workplace. He should also take into account the potential fire hazards.

  • Information obligation: The employer is obliged to inform his employees comprehensively about the fire safety regulations in the home office. This includes the correct use of electrical equipment, the dangers of multiple sockets and the behavior in case of fire.

  • Provide equipment: If necessary, the employer should provide its employees with appropriate fire protection equipment, such as a fire extinguisher or a smoke detector.

  • Regular training: Fire safety training, offered online or in person, is a good way to raise employee awareness.

What employees should consider

Even as an employee, you bear a great responsibility for your own safety. The following tips will help you make your home office brand-proof:

  • Check electronic devices: Use only tested and intact devices. Make sure not to use damaged cables.

  • Be careful with multiple sockets: Never connect multiple outlets in a row. This can lead to overloading and thus to the risk of fire.

  • Free escape routes: Keep the paths to the front door or other exits clear. This also applies to windows that can serve as an escape route in an emergency.

  • Install smoke detectors: Smoke detectors are lifesavers. Check regularly if they still work.

  • Caution with flammable materials: Keep combustible materials such as piles of paper, curtains or textiles away from electronic devices and outlets.

  • Keep fire extinguishers ready: A suitable fire extinguisher (e.g. A foam extinguisher) is a sensible investment. It is important that you know how to use it in an emergency.
